Terrence Hayes

United for Portland is proud to endorse Terrence Hayes for Portland City Council in District 1.

Terrence is also endorsed by Portland Fire Fighters Association, Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors, Portland Police Association, Multifamily NW, District Attorney -elect Nathan Vazquez, East County Rising, and many others.

We all agree: Terrence will be a strong leader for the city of Portland.

The Oregonian newspaper also endorsed Terrence. Here's what they had to say:

For Hayes, 41, improving public safety is his top priority. The area, he points out, faces a higher concentration of gun violence and crime, yet residents routinely face long wait times for police. In addition to filling police vacancies and increasing the size of the force, he wants to restore funding for violence prevention strategies.

His interest isn’t just as a resident. As a Black man formerly incarcerated for attempted murder and a cousin of a teen killed by police, he emphasizes the need for police accountability as well. Hayes has been deeply involved in recent years, chairing a police oversight committee for a Portland Police gun violence team and working with several groups on anti-violence initiatives.

Hayes comes with a caveat. He has a history of unpaid debts both personal and business-related that he is working to repay. While a vulnerability, we do not view it as disqualifying for the role he will play and have previously endorsed a City Council candidate with known financial problems. And in this new form of government, city councilors will not be running bureaus but focusing on policymaking and constituent services. The invaluable experience he brings and his clear-headed commitment to representing East Portland are reason to give Hayes a seat.
